About the Project

In 1999 Heidi & Guy Burgess, and Dick Salem (thanks to support from the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation) developed the Civil Rights Mediation Oral History Project which highlights oral histories from seventeen mediators from the U.S. Community Relations Service (CRS).

In 2021 Heidi Burgess, in collaboration with William (Bill) Froehlich and former CRS Director Grande Lum began collecting new oral histories from former CRS civil rights mediators to revisit the original project.
